Christian Reformed Theological Seminary

The CRTS exists to glorify God and extend His Kingdom rule in this world by serving the Church of Jesus Christ, firstly in South Africa, but then also in to the rest of Africa, to train and inspire Christian leaders from all strata of life to effectively reach the world with the Gospel and build up the Church.

The CRTS is registered as a Private Higher Education Institution, by the Department of Education for the qualifications as shown on Certificate number: 2008/HE08/002.

Adequate preparation for pastoral ministry

I am proud to be associated with the Christian Reformed Theological Seminary. I would like to assure you of a high standard of theological study having graduated from the institution myself in 1994 with a Diploma in Theology. After my studies I served in two churches as Minister of the Gospel and am currently serving the CRTS as Academic Registrar. The reformed and evangelical grooming I received adequately prepared me for the pastoral ministry that I had my heart set on fulfilling as my calling from God. Of particular strength and encouragement to me was the positive mentoring I received from lecturers and ministers of the Christian Reformed Church. I have no hesitation in recommending this institution to you should you feel God calling you to be equipped for his service.

I believe that I obtained the DNA of a missionary

If I look back my studies with CRTS represented a climax in my life. At the age of 41, I sat in the class with young people and was looking forward to a career in the service of the Lord. Although I enjoyed all of the curriculum, Missiology was my favourite subject and I mostly enjoyed the material of Perspectives on the World Christian Movement. Through that, I believe that I obtained the DNA of a missionary and eventually received the passion to also help train others for ministry and missions and help send them out into the Lord’s service.

Spiritual Enrichment and Ministry Practice

My studies with CRTS has mainly prepared and equipped me for my work in the ministry of missions. A key Scripture verse during my study time was 2 Tim 3:17 “… so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work”. I experienced the material as very Scriptural, with appropriate emphasis on missions. The components of Spiritual Enrichment and Ministry Practice give good balance to the academic aspect of the Diploma.

Distance learning has worked out well

Distance learning has worked out well for me. I was able to arrange it around my work and life. The studies have particularly taught me that there are a variety of views on many issues. People with doctor’s degrees are not always in agreement about many things around the Bible. It encouraged me to read widely and to broaden my views concerning many standpoints. I therefore learned to be more tolerant concerning the views and standpoints of others. Interaction with the lecturers, concerning e-mail feedback was very valuable and instructive and I enjoyed it.
I do not regret the years of studies for one moment. I actually missed it afterwards. However, at the outset of my studies I actually struggled until I realized what was expected from me as a student. Degree assignments are not comparable to school assignments. I wish I was younger when I embarked on theological studies. My initial motivation to study has actually been achieved. I was enabled to enter into discussion with others from a reformed perspective without being trapped into any heresies of different views.
